Bank of Korea (Korean: 한국은행; English: Bank of Korea), referred to as BOK, is the central bank of the Republic of Korea. It was officially founded on June 12, 1950 in accordance with the Bank of Korea Act, with its central headquarters located on Namdaemun-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, the capital of South Korea. As the central bank, its core responsibilities include issuing the South Korean won (₩), formulating and implementing monetary policies, maintaining the stability of the financial system, managing national foreign exchange reserves, compiling financial and economic statistics, conducting economic research, etc. It also undertakes the important mission of regulating the financial market and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the payment and settlement system. As of 2024, the bank has 16 local branches. Through scientific monetary policy regulation, it helps stabilize South Korea's macroeconomy and promote the healthy development of the financial market. In November 2025, it renewed the bilateral local currency swap agreement with the People's Bank of China to deepen Sino-South Korean monetary and financial cooperation.
