Gyeongbokgung Palace is located at 161 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea (formerly Hansung, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty). It is the first of the five major palaces in Seoul, the political center and main palace of the Joseon Dynasty, and a famous ancient palace built by Yi Seong-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, starting in 1394 AD. Its name is derived from the word "Gyungbok" in "The Book of Songs·Great Ode to the Kingdom·Jizui": "Drunk with wine, satiated with virtue; may the gentleman live ten thousand years, and be granted great blessings". Covering an area of 126,000 pyeong (about 57.75 hectares), it is square in shape, with buildings mainly in Danqing color, following the regulations of the Ming Dynasty royal palace. Gyeongbokgung Palace has experienced many destructions and reconstructions, and now has iconic buildings such as Gyeongjeon Hall and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. Its internal layout is symmetrical and regular, integrating Confucian harmony concept with natural landscape. It is one of the most representative historical buildings in South Korea and a must-visit place for tourists to understand the ancient court culture of South Korea.
